History

On January 19, 1999, a group of persons assembled in Washington, D.C., to organize a community development corporation. The need for such an organization grew out of a continuing concern that Metropolitan Baptist Church needed to have avenues that would permit it to reach into the community in ways clearly different and distinguishable from the ways churches traditionally serve communities.

On September 8, 2000, Metropolitan Community Development Corporation (MCDC) was incorporated as a non-profit organization to promote the spiritual and cultural enrichment of the community; to plan, provide for and administer community services and programs that contribute to the social development and economic growth of the community, its families and individuals; and to mobilize the resources of the community to promote and sponsor programs for job and life skills training, health care, education, youth development and business development.

Metropolitan Community Development Corporation (MCDC) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit corporation. It is incorporated in the District of Columbia under its Nonprofit Corporation Act and authorized to transact business in the State of Maryland as the “Metropolitan Baptist Community Development Corporation”. Since its inception, MCDC has learned that ordinary individuals with the right spirit and partnerships can achieve extraordinary things.

MCDC’s values are placed in human dignity and personal worth; community involvement; and economic, political, social and spiritual empowerment for underserved people and the communities served.

Our goal is to promote the vision of “faith in action” in the community and provide diverse services that facilitate economic empowerment of communities through programs, activities, and facilities that provide affordable housing for low and moderate income families; encourage and support small business development; and provide training, skills and programs that improve the health, education, and welfare of residents in underserved communities.

Our goal is also to create an “empowerment tradition” that helps and serves in ways that promote self-sufficiency. MCDC seeks to assist in the permanent eradication of poverty and the creation of communities of love and faith. As MCDC engages in community development, it seeks to make a change in the lives of people and empower them to bring about change in their own lives.
