4TH ANNUAL LAZARUS HINES MEMORIAL CELEBRITY GOLF TOURNAMENT

Tournament Information

Dear Friends,

We are happy to announce that the 4th Annual Lazarus Hines Memorial Celebrity Golf Tournament will take place on Friday, July 25, 2008 at Oak Creek Golf Course in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. This year's event will honor one of our founders Deacon Lazarus Hines.

This event will benefit two nonprofit organizations that have provided outstanding service to communities in the Washington DC metropolitan area. They are: Breaking the Chain Foundation and Metropolitan Community Development Corporation. Proceeds from this event will be used to develop and implement programs and services that will "break the chain" of intergenerational incarceration.

The event promises to be a grand affair that will also make a difference in our communities. We have some incredible guests scheduled to participate. Join us on Oak Creek Golf Course in Upper Marlboro, Maryland and have a great time for a great cause.

Sincerely,

Cazzie Russell

ABOUT MCDC…

Founded in 2000, by officials of Metropolitan Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., MCDC was created to build vital, economically and socially vibrant communities where the quality of life for its residents are enhanced and sustained through access to affordable housing, quality education, health care, and opportunities to develop economic wealth through business ownership and financial investments. Since its inception, MCDC has served communities through outreach programs, educational initiatives, and strategic partnerships.

ABOUT LAZARUS HINES…

Deacon Lazarus Hines was one of the founders of Metropolitan Community Development Corporation. He faithfully served on the Board of Directors from the date of incorporation until his illness prevented him from doing so. Deacon Hines will be most remembered for his strong character, his spiritual path, mighty spirit and his insistence on honesty and integrity. He was a constant reminder to his colleagues on the Board that ordinary individuals with the right spirit and partnerships can achieve extraordinary feats as long as they trust in God as the source of all provisions.

Lazarus Hines was an avid golfer. He loved the game. He shared that love and enthusiasm for the game by teaching golf to many members of the Metropolitan Baptist Church family. He was a champion golfer as his numerous awards attest.

The Board of Directors and Staff of Metropolitan Community Development Corporation feel that it is fitting and appropriate that we honor him and show our appreciation for his contributions over the years by dedicating the 2nd Annual Metropolitan Community Development Corporation Celebrity Golf Classic to the memory of Deacon Lazarus Hardison Hines.

Cassie Russell
Cazzie Russell, head coach of the men’s basketball team at the Savannah College of Art and Design is known for a spectacular career at the University of Michigan (1963-1966.) His success there, coupled with that of the team, led to the construction of the Crisler Arena — later referred to as “The House that Cazzie Built.”

Russell scored 2,164 points (27.1 ppg) and grabbed 676 rebounds (8.5 rbg) during his career at Michigan. The Wolverines were 65-17 and won three Big Ten titles and made two NCAA Final Four appearances during the Russell era. Russell holds several Michigan records including the single season scoring average mark of 30.1 points per game.

Russell was an All-American in three varsity seasons at Michigan, earning two Big Ten Most Valuable Player awards, and was named College Player of the year by AP, UPI, and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association in his senior year. On December 11, 1993, Russell became Michigan's first basketball player to have his number retired.

Russell was selected first in the NBA draft by the New York Knicks. He went on to play a key role in helping the Knicks to their first World Championship. During his 13-year career in the NBA, Russell built an outstanding reputation as a player for the Golden State Warriors, where he was an All-Star selection; the LA Lakers, where he teamed up with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar; and the Chicago Bulls, where he finished his career. He retired from the NBA in 1978 and became a sport analyst for CBS television's NBA Game of the week. Russell is a member of the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame and the Chicago Sports Hall of Fame.
