Youth Development

MCDC's ABSTINENCE PROGRAM

"Another World Experience", Metropolitan Community Development Corporation's community-based abstinence education program is designed for youth, ages 14 through 18. The exclusive purpose of the program is to teach the social, psychological, and health gains to be realized by abstaining from sexual activity prior to marriage, as well as avoidance of other at-risk behaviors. MCDC uses a holistic approach to teach abstinence which involves comprehensive services that provide youth with abstinence education, personal development, academic support, school advocacy, mentorship, and college assistance.

Another World Experience instructs high school students on the benefits of abstinence and help bring visibility to this often overlooked alternative to sexual activity. Through educational lectures, informative handouts, personal testimonies and creative role play exercises, it is our hope that more District teens will commit to abstaining from sexual activity until marriage.

The comprehensive approach used to service students is modeled after Demoiselle 2 Femme and B.R.O.T.H.A.S, two successful abstinence programs in Phoenix, Illinois that have positively impacted the same target population. The abstinence education program consists of two main educational components-a comprehensive after-school program and a classroom based lecture series. The project will complete the following:

  • Identify and select male and female participants to receive comprehensive and holistic abstinence education using the PRIDE and POWER curricula;
  • Teach classroom abstinence education to students.
  • Facilitate Parent Education Workshops and bi-monthly Parent Meetings that teach parents the importance of teaching their children abstinence, and how to develop a consistent message in their home, as well as other strategies for successful parenting;
  • Use holistic approaches to teach abstinence of all at-risk behaviors as well as proper social skills, personal hygiene, goal setting, refusal skills, and academic achievement.
  • Redefine self- image and promote self-acceptance, self-respect, and respect for others;
  • Conceptualize the reality of marriage and help participants to fulfill a commitment to abstain from pre-marital sex, alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs;
  • Encourage participants to continue in and graduate from high school and enroll into a college or university of their choice;
  • Host an Annual Abstinence Celebration,
  • Manage the grant effectively by accomplishing all of the objectives as defined.

The program will increase an awareness of abstinence, higher self-concept, reduce proportion of adolescents engaged in sexual intercourse, reduce incidence of sexually transmitted diseases among teens, reduce fertility rate among teenagers 14-18, reduce pregnancy rate among 14-18 year olds, higher retention and graduation rate, higher college enrollment rate for all college-ready participants, and increase the number of youth ages 14-18 who commit to abstain from pre-marital sex, alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
